Riga in 2026: My Local’s Guide

Riga Central Market Zeppelin hangar pavilions with morning market stalls

I wrote a Riga guide years ago as a proud local. Consider this the 2026 edition, upgraded by the perspective of everywhere else, the exact route I run every friend who visits.

1. Alberta Iela

The greatest hits street of Riga’s Art Nouveau, facades crowded with sphinxes, faces and geometry. Come before 9am for empty pavements and raking light. It’s the single most photogenic street in the Baltics.

2. The Central Market Hangars

Five pavilions built from WWI Zeppelin hangars, running as a working market for a century. Smoked fish, rye bread, berries by the bucket in summer. Eat breakfast standing up like everyone else.

3. Old Town, Off the Spine

Skip the main drag’s amber shops and drift two streets over: quiet courtyards, medieval lanes, the Three Brothers houses. The Old Town rewards the lost.

4. St. Peter’s Tower at Golden Hour

The best view of the red rooftops, the river and the TV tower on its island. Time it an hour before sunset and watch the city turn copper.

5. A Canal Boat Loop

The little boats circle the Old Town through the park canal and out to the Daugava. Tourist-coded, and worth it anyway, Riga from water level is a different, softer city.

6. Kalnciema Quarter on Saturday

Restored wooden architecture hosting a weekend market, local cheese, craft everything, live music. This is where Riga’s weekend actually happens, across the river from where tourists look for it.

7. Miera Iela

The creative artery: coffee roasters, studios, and bars that don’t try hard. If you want to meet the Riga that makes things, it drinks its coffee here.

8. Jūrmala, Always

Twenty-five minutes by train to pine forests, wooden villas and kilometers of white Baltic sand. In July the water is swimmable and the evenings endless. No capital-plus-beach combination in Europe beats this one for the money.

Two days does Riga’s highlights. A week makes you consider real estate. You’ve been warned.
