Tourist lists tell you where to go once. A month in a city tells you where you go twice, and then five more times. These are the Cape Town spots that survived repetition.
1. The Sea Point Promenade
My daily reset. Ocean on one side, Lion’s Head on the other, and the entire city out walking at golden hour. If I could only film one location to explain Cape Town’s mood, this is it.
2. Chapman’s Peak Drive
114 curves carved into a cliff between Hout Bay and Noordhoek. I drove it six times and the sixth was as good as the first. Late afternoon, southbound, is the direction that matters.
3. Kirstenbosch Gardens
A botanical garden that happens to have a mountain range as its back wall. The canopy walkway gives you treetop views without a hike. Weekday mornings you’ll have entire lawns to yourself.
4. Oranjezicht City Farm Market
Saturday mornings by the V&A. Local produce, serious coffee, and the best casual breakfast in the city. This is where Cape Town actually hangs out.
5. Signal Hill at Sunset
Easier than Lion’s Head, no hike required, and arguably the better view of the sun dropping into the Atlantic. Bring a jacket, the wind has opinions.
6. Muizenberg Beach
The rainbow surf shacks are the postcard, but the reason to return is the water: warm(ish), gentle, and the easiest learn-to-surf wave I’ve found anywhere. False Bay mornings are glassy gold.
7. Boulders Beach
Penguins, granite boulders, turquoise coves. Go at opening time, by 10am it’s a queue, at 8am it’s a nature documentary.
8. The Bo-Kaap at Soft Light
The painted houses photograph best in early morning or the hour before sunset. Be respectful, it’s a living neighborhood, not a set, and the portraits you’ll get of the streets are unlike anywhere else in Africa.
A month wasn’t enough. That’s the highest compliment I can pay a city.
