Cape Town’s superpower is impersonation. Within an hour of the city, I filmed scenes that could pass for five different continents. If you ever need the whole world in one trip, here’s the map.
1. Atlantis Dunes, the Sahara
Forty minutes north: pure white dunes to the horizon. I’ve filmed real deserts on three continents; from the right angle, this passes for any of them.
2. Boulders Beach, Antarctica
Penguins waddling across granite. The water temperature helps sell the illusion.
3. Chapman’s Peak, the Amalfi Coast
Cliff road, turquoise bays, hairpin drama. Italy charges more for the same view.
4. The Winelands, Tuscany
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek: Cape Dutch gables among vineyards, mountains behind. Golden hour here is indistinguishable from Italian October.
5. Table Mountain’s Summit, the Alps
Above the cloud line the temperature drops, the vegetation turns alpine, and the city disappears entirely. A cable car to another climate.
6. Muizenberg, California
Beach shacks, longboards, surf-town ease. Venice Beach with better light and cheaper coffee.
7. The Bo-Kaap, the Caribbean
Lime, pink and cobalt houses under hard blue sky. Havana grades into Cape Malay history.
8. Kirstenbosch Canopy Walk, a Rainforest
The “Boomslang” walkway snakes through treetops thick enough to lose the sky. Costa Rica energy, ten minutes from the highway.
9. Cape Point, the End of the World
Where the peninsula runs out: cliffs, lighthouses, ocean in two directions and wind that means it. It feels less like another continent than like the edge of all of them.
Nine locations, one base, no long-haul connections. I’ve spent entire years chasing what this city keeps within an hour’s drive.
