I wrote a general LA guide years ago. This is the other version, LA as a working city for creators, refined over repeat visits and sharpened by having part of Zahare Media based here. Where I actually shoot, eat and get work done when I’m in town.
Where I Shoot
Griffith at sunrise. The observatory before 7am gives you the skyline, the Hollywood sign and the marine layer burning off, three shots in one location with parking still available. By 10am it’s a theme park.
El Matador Beach. The most cinematic stretch of Malibu: sea stacks, caves, golden cliffs. Low tide plus golden hour is the formula; check both before driving out.
The Arts District. Murals, warehouses, bridges, LA’s most texture-dense square mile. Weekend mornings are dead quiet, which is exactly what you want.
The PCH itself. The drive is the shot. Mount something, leave at 6am northbound, and let the coast do the work.
Where I Edit
LA runs on laptop-friendly coffee. My rotation lives between West Hollywood and Venice, pick anywhere with power outlets and cold brew, arrive at opening, leave before lunch rush. The real edit secret in LA is the time zone: mornings here are Europe’s late afternoon, so I edit while clients sleep and send cuts as they wake up.
Where I Eat
Taco trucks over tasting menus, the constant in every LA trip I’ve ever taken. The city’s best food frequently has wheels and a queue of people who clearly know something. Follow the queue.
The Honest Note on LA
Distances are real, traffic is real, and a day with three locations across the city is a day spent driving. Plan LA like a shoot schedule: one zone per day, locations clustered, light hours protected. Treat it that way and LA gives you more production value per week than almost any city on Earth, which is, after all, why the entire industry lives here.
