The Maldives set the benchmark for overwater villas and turquoise water. But after visiting 117 countries, I can confidently say there are islands that offer something the Maldives doesn’t: more variety, more culture, or more dramatic landscapes.
I’m Max Zaharenkov, and for me, luxury isn’t just about water clarity. It’s about depth of experience. These six islands deliver privacy and beauty, but also dimension.
1. Seychelles
Granite rock formations, jungle-covered hills, and beaches that feel untouched. Unlike the Maldives, Seychelles gives you elevation and terrain variety.
2. French Polynesia (Bora Bora & beyond)
Yes, overwater villas exist here too, but with volcanic mountain backdrops that add visual drama missing in the flat Maldivian horizon.
3. Palawan
Limestone cliffs rising from emerald water. Hidden lagoons. Strong adventure component alongside luxury resorts.
4. Fiji
More cultural immersion. Village visits, reef diversity, and private island buyouts that feel deeply personal.
5. Zanzibar
Historic Stone Town, spice farms, and Indian Ocean beaches. You get heritage layered into your beach stay.
6. Koh Rong
Less polished, more raw. Bioluminescent plankton at night. A different kind of luxury, slower and less commercial.
What makes these islands better than the Maldives? Contrast. The Maldives perfects one aesthetic, calm, flat, controlled luxury. These islands add mountains, culture, history, and sometimes adventure.
In my opinion, the “best” island depends on what you value. If you want pure privacy and simplicity, Maldives wins. If you want landscape diversity and narrative, these six outperform.
