Why I Spent a Month in Cape Town

Most of my trips are measured in days. This one is measured in weeks: I’ve set up in Cape Town for a month. It’s the longest I’ve stayed anywhere outside my bases in years, and the decision was entirely deliberate.

The Density Problem, Solved

Cape Town solves the problem every travel filmmaker has: distance between shots. Within an hour of the city you have an iconic flat-topped mountain, two oceans’ worth of coastline, a penguin colony, wine valleys that pass for Tuscany, white dunes that pass for the Sahara, and one of the world’s great coastal drives at Chapman’s Peak. Nowhere else I’ve filmed in 117 countries packs this much visual variety into one base.

The Light

May is autumn sliding into winter here, and the light gets serious, low sun angles all day, storm fronts rolling over Table Mountain, moody Atlantic drama. Summer Cape Town is postcards. Winter Cape Town is cinema. Fewer tourists in every frame is the bonus.

The Practical Truth

A month here costs what ten days costs in Europe. Production value per dollar is unmatched: locations, food, apartments, the exchange rate works hard in your favor. And the timezone sits one hour off Central European Time, which means my London and Milan clients never notice I’m 10,000 kilometers away.

Slow Travel, Faster Output

Here’s the paradox I’m testing this month: staying still produces more. No packing cycles, no airport days, no first-48-hours disorientation tax. I know where the light falls by day three, and every day after that compounds. Early results: I’m shooting more usable material per week than on any hop-around trip this year.

A full month of guides is coming, the spots I keep returning to, what’s changed since my first visit, and what the Cape’s wind does to drone plans (a preview: everything). Cape Town isn’t a stop this time. It’s a season.
