What Creators Get Wrong About Conferences

I’m writing this from Los Angeles, at the start of VidCon week. It’s far from my first creator conference, and by now I’ve watched the same mistakes repeat annually, including, in earlier years, my own. If you’re attending any industry event this year, here’s what a decade of them taught me.

Mistake 1: Going for the Panels

The panels are the menu, not the meal. Almost everything said on stage will be clipped, posted and summarized within a day. The thing you cannot get remotely is the hallway, the conversations between sessions, the coffee lines, the person you sit next to. I plan maybe two panels a day and protect the gaps between them like shoot days.

Mistake 2: Arriving Without Meetings

The most valuable meetings at any conference are booked two weeks before it starts. By the time you land, calendars are full. My rule: if I haven’t scheduled at least five conversations before the flight, I haven’t earned the ticket yet. The event is the excuse; the agenda is yours to build.

Mistake 3: Networking Instead of Talking

Collecting fifty contacts means nothing. Three real conversations, where you understood someone’s actual problem and they understood yours, outperform a lanyard full of scanned badges every time. People remember substance, not introductions.

Mistake 4: Content Over Presence

Filming everything means being present for nothing. I shoot one short recap, then put the camera away. The irony of creator events: the people filming constantly are usually the ones leaving with the least.

Mistake 5: No Follow-Up Window

Whatever happens this week is worth exactly as much as the 48 hours after it. Every promising conversation gets a message before the weekend ends, while you’re still a face, not a name in a pile. This is the entire ROI mechanism of conferences, and almost nobody does it.

Full takeaways from the week, specifically for brands working with creators, coming once it wraps.
